Should you wish to invite me to come and talk at your school, I would be very happy to do so. Depending on how interactive it would be, the session would take anything from 30 minutes to an hour. In the talk, I would discuss creative writing in general, the process, how I write (because each author is different) and why I am writing the series on Steve Tackles Life.
I would also read a chapter or two to give an idea of how the book flows (and the language used). Because the book is aimed at children aged 8-12 years old (although in my focus groups, I have had boys and girls ranging from 7 to 15 read and enjoy the book), I would like to suggest that grades 4-6 might be best.
I find that a very informal grouping of around 100 children works best. This way, the youngsters or shy childrren don't feel intimidated about asking questions, and for me, that's the highlight of the event.
These talks would tie in with school themes like creative writing, Library Week, Literary Day, Book Character Day and Life Orientation.
Because of the themes covered in the book, some schools have expressed interest in buying copies for their L.O. classes. In the story, Steve battles a bully and has had to come to terms with the loss of a dear family member. He is a sporting hero, but must also learn valuable lessons that sports teach, like hard work and practice, pulling together as one and learning how to overcome tough times with reslience.
Should you, as a teacher or HOD, wish to pre-read the book first, please get in contact and I will happily email you a PDF copy.
There is no fee for my talk, but here are some of my thoughts on making this work:
Please fill in the contact form below.
- I would like to ask for some pre-publicity by informing parents of the talk in advance to encourage sales of the book (I will bring copies, for sale at R80 each and will happily autograph each one);
- If the school is in an outlying area of KZN or another province, I would request assistance in giving talks at other schools to recoup costs;
- I would recommend groups no larger than about 100 children at a time;
- I would like the school to consider buying copies of the book for L.O. and their library.
